SUMMARY:WI Book Festival Author Event: A Little More Social - How Small Choices Create Unexpected Happiness\, Health\, and Connection (Nicholas Epley)
DESCRIPTION:October 18th\n1:30-2:30pm\nCentral Library – Lower-Level Program Room \nPresented in partnership with the Wisconsin Book Festival. \nThere is a paradox at the core of human life. We are a highly social species uniquely equipped to connect with other people and doing so is better for us. Yet we so often choose to be unsocial. We avoid talking to the stranger who sits next to us. We struggle to move beyond small talk with an acquaintance. We are reluctant to express our gratitude to people we appreciate. Every day\, we avoid opportunities to connect with strangers\, neighbors\, colleagues\, friends\, and family. By missing those moments\, we miss out on all the benefits of a more social life—one that is happier and healthier for everyone. \nUniversity of Chicago psychologist and author of Mindwise\, Nicholas Epley has spent his career studying the way we connect\, and he has found that our social fears often keep us from reaching out. But Epley shows us how to seize the small moments with insights such as: \n\nSocial connection is a choice we make based on expectations about how others will respond to us—expectations that tend to be overly pessimistic.\nIntroverts and extroverts alike benefit from choosing to be a little more social.\nMistaken expectations can cause us to avoid interacting in ways that create strong connections—such as having a conversation—in favor of less satisfying interactions—such as social media or texting.\nWhile many books promise one big fix\, making a habit of small connections is much more likely to improve your life.\nThe habits and practices that Epley advocates are approachable. The beauty of this book is that small acts have an outsized impact on the most important parts of our lives.\n\nBridging the gap between two people is easier than we think\, and success more likely\, if we choose to be a little more social. \nIn conversation with Shannon Henry Kleiber. \nCheck out more Wisconsin Book Festival & Wisconsin Science Festival partner events here!

SUMMARY:WI Book Festival Author Event: Zameen: Pakistani Roots\, Wisconsin Soil (Sultan Ahmed\, Kayla Gendron)
DESCRIPTION:October 18th\n12-1pm\nCentral Library\, Lower-Level Program Room \nPresented in partnership with the Wisconsin Book Festival. \nZameen means land\, and this cookbook is an argument firmly rooted in the soil upon which it was written.\n\nIn his debut cookbook\, chef Sultan Ahmed of Sultan Restaurant reimagines Pakistani cooking through the bounty of the Wisconsin landscape. Nihari is prepared with Wisconsin-farmed beef. Raitas are created using fresh Wisconsin yogurt. Combining techniques and inspiration from around the globe\, Zameen is a gateway into a bold new cosmopolitan cuisine.\nThese are not thirty-minute meals. Zameen asks you to slow down. Toast and grind your own spices\, braise slowly without an Insta-pot\, taste and adapt. Spices are measured in relative parts rather than fixed spoonfuls\, because no two jars of turmeric are ever the same\, and the only true judge of flavor is your palette. Great spice cookery is a conversation. \nOrganized around the Midwest growing year\, the recipes move through the seasons\, showcasing the bounty of Midwest agriculture throughout the year. The staple Friday fish fry is reimagined with Punjabi spices and sardines\, and the classic gulab jamun is enhanced with Wisconsin maple syrup. Each recipe is grounded in technique and intention\, paying respect to the cultures and cuisines which inspire the dish. \nZameen is a product of a first-generation Pakistani immigrant’s journey from a courtyard kitchen in Karachi to his own dining room in Wisconsin. It is a serious technical instruction in cooking which insists that Pakistani cuisine belongs among the great cooking traditions of the world. Food cannot be constrained by national borders. \nCheck out more Wisconsin Book Festival & Wisconsin Science Festival partner events here!

SUMMARY:WI Book Festival Author Event: Stone Age Astronaut (Liam Callanan)
DESCRIPTION:October 17th\n4:30-5:30pm\nCentral Library – Community Room 302 \nPresented in partnership with the Wisconsin Book Festival. \nAward-winning author Liam Callanan uncovers the astonishing life of Lester Maitland—the Milwaukee-born aviator who\, in 1927\, became the first person to fly to Hawaii\, earning national acclaim on par with Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic triumph. For a brief moment\, the two men shared headlines\, White House invitations\, and fame. But while Lindbergh’s legacy grew\, Maitland’s all but vanished. \nCallanan brings Maitland back into the spotlight\, tracing his meteoric early career: flight instructor at nineteen; one of the US Army’s first test pilots; the first American to fly faster than 200 mph; and the pioneering airman whose Pacific crossing earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross. \nJust twenty-two days after becoming Executive Officer of the Far East Air Service Command—and one day after Pearl Harbor—Maitland witnessed the destruction of much of the Far East Air Force in the Philippines. Later\, he commanded the 386th Bomb Group in Europe\, making him World War II’s oldest bomber pilot\, only to be abruptly and mysteriously retired weeks before D-Day. After the war\, Maitland experienced a series of professional and personal disappointments\, and he quietly faded into obscurity. He eventually became an Episcopal priest\, serving small parishes far from the glamour of his early days in the cockpit. \nThe pages of Stone Age Astronaut hum with the tension and excitement of early aviation\, rendered in a richly detailed narrative and Callanan’s research—spanning archives\, newspapers\, interviews\, and travel to key sites—to reveal the remarkable sweep of Lester Maitland’s world. Along the way\, readers encounter a constellation of notable figures\, including Amelia Earhart\, Billy Mitchell\, Ernest Hemingway\, Gerald Ford\, and Harry Houdini. With sparkling prose and a storyteller’s instinct for detail\, Callanan resurrects a man whose life intersected with major events\, eras\, and personalities—but who has inexplicably slipped through the cracks of American memory. A gripping portrait of ambition\, innovation\, fame\, failure\, and reinvention—and the enduring human urge to fly—Stone Age Astronaut ensures that Lester Maitland’s extraordinary story will no longer be forgotten. \nIn conversation with Jeff Oloizia. \nCheck out more Wisconsin Book Festival & Wisconsin Science Festival partner events here!

SUMMARY:WI Book Festival Author Event: Dispelling Dementia - Narratives of Loss and Resilience (Nathanial Chin & Robert Kolker)
DESCRIPTION:October 17th\n1:30-2:30pm\nCentral Library – Community Room 302 \nPresented in partnership with the Wisconsin Book Festival. \nDr. Nathaniel Chin and Robert Kolker will join in conversation about two families’ journeys tackling the impact and influence of dementia on their loved ones’ lives. Approaching the topic from varying perspectives—from medical to journalistic—Chin’s When Memory Fades and Kolker’s The Vanishing Family speak to the scientific\, emotional\, and social tolls of this complex disease. \nIn conversation with WPR host\, Lee Rayburn. \nWhen Memory Fades: What to Expect at Every Stage\, from Early Signs to Full Support for Alzheimer’s and Dementia is clear\, smart\, and cuts through the understandable impulse to deny symptoms and grasp at ineffective treatments. From the first concerns that something might be wrong right through to the toughest stages of the disease\, When Memory Fades provides granular information and frames topics that help readers figure out how to think about what’s happening. \nIn the idyllic American town of Pleasant Hills\, Pennsylvania\, there lived a family with nine siblings\, the youngest a girl named Barb. As the older children headed off to college and started their lives\, only Barb was home to see their beautiful\, still-young mother fall under a gothic spell\, changing into someone she didn’t recognize: withdrawn\, neglectful\, uncaring. Thus begins The Vanishing Family\, journalist Robert Kolker’s superb follow-up to Hidden Valley Road. This family\, we learn\, has a genetic mutation that causes dementia\, but with an especially cruel twist. As early as their forties\, formerly loving parents and hard-driving executives will lose their jobs\, have affairs\, take up drinking—shed all inhibitions and sense of responsibility—and become people their families hardly know. Their former personalities seem to vanish—and there is a fifty-fifty chance that it will happen to their children\, too. \nCheck out more Wisconsin Book Festival & Wisconsin Science Festival partner events here!

SUMMARY:WI Book Festival Author Event: Chasing Lewis's Monkeyflower (Elizabeth Adelman)
DESCRIPTION:October 17th\n10:30-11:30am\nCentral Library – Community Room 302 \nPresented in partnership with the Wisconsin Book Festival. \nA look at the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the plant specimens the great explorers gathered on their way—and of their amazing afterlife. \nElizabeth Adelman’s Chasing Lewis’s Monkeyflower is the two hundred-year saga of finding\, losing\, and finding the wild plants collected on America’s first exploration west\, the Lewis and Clark Expedition. \nThomas Jefferson handpicked Meriwether Lewis to lead the expedition\, gather notable specimens along the way\, and then write the journals\, with one volume to include science-worthy descriptions and classifications of the plants that Lewis collected and pressed to preserve. Not a botanist\, Lewis needed help to write this part of the journals. \nAmbition\, deceit\, theft\, wealth\, debt\, alcoholism\, loss\, suicide\, serendipity\, and stubborn persistence cross the plants’ paths in Philadelphia\, New York\, and London. This is the first work detailing the places\, practices\, and times of a cavalcade of people who touched the plants. A fascinating chronicle of an unexplored byway of the great American story. \nHosted by Mary Bottari.  \nCheck out more Wisconsin Book Festival & Wisconsin Science Festival partner events here!

SUMMARY:WI Book Festival Author Event: Every Living Creature (Joshua Mezrich)
DESCRIPTION:October 15th\n7pm-8pm\nCentral Library – Lower-Level Program Room \nPresented in partnership with the Wisconsin Book Festival. \nWith more than 100\,000 patients in the United States waiting for life-saving organ transplants\, the shortage of organs will never be solved if someone must die for someone else to be saved. And yet a solution is well within reach—xenotransplantation\, or the transplanting of organs between different species—the once unimaginable scientific achievement that Joshua Mezrich explores in Every Living Creature. \nThe story begins with efforts using chimpanzees and baboons in the 60s through the 90s\, rife with ethical and practical complications and disappointments. The successful cloning of Dolly the sheep revived xeno-optimism\, followed by the discovery of CRISPR-Cas9\, which finally opened the door to xenotransplantation in humans\, using genetically modified pigs as organ donors. \nThe protagonists of this story are as incredible as the science it details: a transgender visionary\, the highest paid female CEO in the world\, who simply wants her daughter to live; the surgeon saved by a high-risk heart transplant\, who swears by the promise of pigs’ organs; the brilliant and brash surgeon-scientist-entrepreneur who is risking everything to make xenotransplantation a reality. Each plays a part in what is\, in the end\, the story of a miracle—not the answer to a prayer\, as Every Living Creature makes clear\, but a miracle we can breed. \nIn conversation with Dr. Margaret (Gretchen) Schwarze. \nCheck out more Wisconsin Book Festival & Wisconsin Science Festival partner events here!

SUMMARY:WI Book Festival Author Event: Homesick for a World Unknown (Miriam Horn)
DESCRIPTION:October 15th\n5:30-6:30pm\nCentral Library\, Community Room 302 \nPresented in partnership with the Wisconsin Book Festival and the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies. Registration is requested – sign up here. \nMeet environmental advocate\, journalist\, and filmmaker Miriam Horn\, whose latest book chronicles the life of the world’s most transformative\, yet elusive\, field biologist — and UW–Madison alumnus — George B. Schaller. \n“Schaller found his deepest satisfactions by disappearing into the last wildernesses\, his eyes wide open. We could all stand to learn from his humility.” — Gary Rosen\, The New York Times Book Review \nHomesick for a World Unkonwn by Miriam Horn is a riveting portrait of George B. Schaller\, the world’s leading field biologist\, that captures the seventy years he spent living among wild animals in the world’s remotest regions\, forever altering how we see—and save—the natural world. \nIn 1959\, though just twenty-six years old and a graduate student\, George B. Schaller shrugged off warnings of mortal danger and set off for the Belgian Congo to do what no other scientist had dared: study mountain gorillas\, the real King Kong\, by living alongside them. Boldly refusing arms and retinue\, Schaller and his wife\, Kay\, established a home in the jungle and came to share the apes’ rhythms and rules. After nearly two years of immersive research—a groundbreaking methodology he would spend his life honing—Schaller transformed how the world viewed gorillas; they were not murderous brutes but tender creatures\, and more like humans than any twentieth-century scientist had recognized. His mission to revolutionize our perceptions of wild animals would propel him across four continents and inspire generations of scientists. \nIn Homesick for a World Unknown\, Miriam Horn draws on thousands of pages from Schaller’s journals and letters\, globe-spanning interviews\, and two journeys into the field with the legendary scientist himself to trace his emergence as the founding father of modern wildlife conservation. She probes what drives him to know Earth’s wildest places and most fearsome creatures\, beginning with a childhood upended by displacement and atrocity. Born in Berlin in 1933 to an American socialite married to a German diplomat working for the Nazi regime\, the young Schaller was moved from one occupied country to another before finally arriving with his mother in the U.S. in 1947\, as an enemy alien. It was in the Missouri woods that teenage George found a place of respite and at the University of Alaska that he found both his calling and a lifelong partner in Kay. \nIn the decades following his work in the Congo\, Schaller went on to conduct the earliest studies of Indian tigers\, Chinese pandas\, Asiatic Cheetah\, and Tibetan antelope\, meticulously cataloging their private lives. He navigated acute danger\, violent conflict\, and treacherous politics in pursuit of empathy for and preservation of creatures big and small. It was Schaller who first guided Jane Goodall on her chimp study in Tanzania and led Peter Matthiessen into Nepal in search of the snow leopard. And while remaking wildlife science\, his impact went further still: he spurred the creation of vast national parks and partnered with local communities to protect the homes they share with these animals. A vivid and captivating account of the adventurous life of George B. Schaller\, here is the definitive portrait of the man who dared to challenge us to rethink our place in the natural world. \nHosted by Nathan Schulfer. In conversation with Meghan Hills. \n. \nCheck out more Wisconsin Book Festival & Wisconsin Science Festival partner events here!
