SUMMARY:PRE-FESTIVAL EVENT: Badger Talk - Bringing Dino-Birds to Life
DESCRIPTION:Uwe Bergmann’s Badger Talk – Bringing Dino-Birds to Life \nBirds have captured every corner of our planet. Long before modern birds appeared\, some dinosaurs started to show feathers rather than scales. With the help of powerful X-rays\, we are trying to disentangle the chemical remains in some of the most iconic dino-bird fossils\, including the famous Archaeopteryx\, and what we can learn about the life of these amazing creatures.

SUMMARY:Tyke Hike and Bioblitz
DESCRIPTION:Meet one of our youth services librarians at Cushing Park (600 N. Cushing Park Rd) at 10:00 am on October 15. We’ll go on a 30 minute hike on the Ice Age Trail and do a BioBlitz as we go. It’s recommended that you download the iNaturalist app before attending if you want to practice using the app for your observations\, but this is not required. The hike is stroller accessible; be aware that some of the paths are gravel. Take home a backyard identification guide for some local animals. Check our Facebook page for any updates due to inclement weather\, or register for the event to get notification of any changes. Look for the event tab towards the top of our website. \nLearn more about the WiSciFest BioBlitz and join the project on iNaturalist here!

Take pictures of what you find on your hike and submit it to iNaturalist\, a community citizen science app. It may seem like fun and games (which it definitely is!)\, but we are also collecting important data for scientists to use for their research! There will be a raffle and freebies available for attendees to take home as well. \nThis program will be located at Freedom Park (200 Monroe St\, Prescott\, WI 54021). \nHot chocolate and water will be provided for attendees. Trails are paved and include a lookout with binocular scopes for a great view of the Mississippi River confluence. Need a set of binoculars\, field guide\, or park pack before you explore? Check out our list of materials you can check out with your library card to prepare you for a bioblitz >> more.bibliocommons.com/v2/list/display/1981062299/2775885697 \nLearn more about the BioBlitz here >> https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/wisconsin-science-festival-bioblitz-2026

SUMMARY:The Insect Epiphany: How Our Six-Legged Allies Shape Human Culture
DESCRIPTION:Barrett Klein\, University of Wisconsin – La Crosse professor and author of The Insect Epiphany\, will share his knowledge and passion with us at this event. \nInsects surround us. They fuel life on Earth through their roles as pollinators\, predators\, and prey\, but rarely do we consider the outsized influence they have had on our culture and civilization. Their anatomy and habits inform how we live\, work\, create art\, and innovate —from ancient etchings to avant-garde art\, from bug-based meals to haute couture—The Insect Epiphany proves that our world would look very different without insects\, not just because they are crucial to our ecosystems\, but because they have shaped and inspired so many aspects of what makes us human.
