SUMMARY:Washburn Observatory Open House
DESCRIPTION:We will be opening the Observatory to the public regardless of weather\, though we hope for favorable weather so we can use the telescope to look at some astronomical objects! Come see the historic 15.6″ Clark refractor and enjoy the view of the night sky atop beautiful Observatory Hill\, following traditions of our ancestors for over 10\,000 years. The dome is open to the outside air so dress appropriately. Food and drinks\, as well as flash photography are not allowed in the observatory. \nIn the event that weather is not favorable on the 17th\, the Observatory will be open on October 24th from 7-10pm.

SUMMARY:Exploring Climate Solutions: The Superpowers of Street Trees
DESCRIPTION:How can a crabapple tree be a weapon in the fight against climate change? Stop by this booth at the Superior Downtown Farmer’s Market to try out some hands-on activities that help answer this question. Staff from the LEAF K-12 Forestry Education Program will be on hand with tools like infrared thermometers and carbon sequestration measurement tapes that marketgoers can use to explore the benefits of street trees. We will also have information and resources related to planting edible forests. There will be fun things to do for both children and adults! No registration is required for this drop-in exhibit. \nThis is one of a series of events offered by the Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education at UW-Stevens Point in partnership with the Wisconsin Science Festival. Brian Lindow draws on years of experience at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and nearly a decade working at Skywalker Ranch to bring an engaging program to audiences of all ages. \nThe journey begins with the science of lasers and fusion. Brian introduces the history and mission of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and offers a glimpse into the work happening at the National Ignition Facility\, including his personal connection to the groundbreaking achievement of fusion ignition. \nBrian then takes audiences behind the scenes at Skywalker Ranch\, sharing photographs and stories from his years working with George Lucas and contributing to the filmmaking process. \nThe program concludes with a hands-on look at fascinating science materials\, including:\n• a giant salt crystal\n• laser targets\n• aerogel—the world’s lightest manmade material \nGuests will have the chance to get up close with the materials and even hold a piece of aerogel for themselves.

DESCRIPTION:The Einstein Design Lab is coming to the Waupaca Area Public Library as part of the 2026 Wisconsin Science Festival. \nThis rolling makerspace includes 3D printers\, laser cutters\, laptops and lot’s of prototyping materials. Programs center on Design Thinking with activities such as tinkering\, guided projects\, design scrambles\, CAD and digital fabrication. Bring the family and observe this special makerspace and take part in a special project. \nWe thank the Einstein Project for the opportunity to host this event. For over three decades\, the Einstein Project has provided leadership in transformational change in STEM education in Wisconsin.
