DESCRIPTION:October 15th\n7pm-8pm\nCentral Library – Lower-Level Program Room \nPresented in partnership with the Wisconsin Book Festival. \nWith more than 100\,000 patients in the United States waiting for life-saving organ transplants\, the shortage of organs will never be solved if someone must die for someone else to be saved. And yet a solution is well within reach—xenotransplantation\, or the transplanting of organs between different species—the once unimaginable scientific achievement that Joshua Mezrich explores in Every Living Creature. \nThe story begins with efforts using chimpanzees and baboons in the 60s through the 90s\, rife with ethical and practical complications and disappointments. The successful cloning of Dolly the sheep revived xeno-optimism\, followed by the discovery of CRISPR-Cas9\, which finally opened the door to xenotransplantation in humans\, using genetically modified pigs as organ donors. \nThe protagonists of this story are as incredible as the science it details: a transgender visionary\, the highest paid female CEO in the world\, who simply wants her daughter to live; the surgeon saved by a high-risk heart transplant\, who swears by the promise of pigs’ organs; the brilliant and brash surgeon-scientist-entrepreneur who is risking everything to make xenotransplantation a reality. Rooted in this history\, visitors are encouraged to consider how design shapes the spaces where children play\, learn\, and explore. Interactive displays and replicated study scenarios invite visitors into the world of the Child Development Lab throughout its first 100 years\, with a focus on the research that takes place at every level in support of the social\, emotional\, and educational development of UW’s youngest students. \nThis exhibition is curated by Dr. Sarah Anne Carter\, Chipstone Foundation Design and Material Culture Chair\, Associate Professor of Design Studies\, and Executive Director of the Nancy M. Bruce Center for Design and Material Culture\, in collaboration with Saffron Gonzalez\, the Child Development Lab Centennial Project Coordinator\, and many generous colleagues in the Child Development Lab and Human Development and Family Studies Department. The Science of Human Thriving and its related programs are made possible with support from the Anonymous Fund\, many generous donors and partners who share the vision of the Nancy M. Bruce Center for Design and Material Culture\, and the School of Human Ecology. The center creates meaningful opportunities for students\, faculty\, and the broader community to engage with textiles\, design\, and material culture. \nIn 2026\, University of Wisconsin–Madison’s School of Human Ecology is marking 100 years of its Child Development Lab\, among the first university-based preschool laboratories of its kind in the U.S.\, and celebrating its leading role in the field of early relational health. DESCRIPTION:Join Ebling Library’s Curator of Historical Collections for an exhibition open house of “Craft/Work: A History of Occupational and Art Therapies.” Drawn from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s medical history collections\, the exhibition traces the intersections of psychiatry\, disability rights\, social work\, and art across three centuries to explore how art- and craftmaking affect our wellbeing. Craft/Work moves from the French Revolutionary origins of “moral treatment” in asylums to the emergence of occupational therapy from the Arts and Crafts and Settlement House movements to the surprising influence of Bauhaus emigrés on theories of art therapy. \nPlease note that the exhibition includes materials that depict graphic wartime injuries and full-frontal male nudity. Schaller shrugged off warnings of mortal danger and set off for the Belgian Congo to do what no other scientist had dared: study mountain gorillas\, the real King Kong\, by living alongside them. Born in Berlin in 1933 to an American socialite married to a German diplomat working for the Nazi regime\, the young Schaller was moved from one occupied country to another before finally arriving with his mother in the U.S. in 1947\, as an enemy alien. It was in the Missouri woods that teenage George found a place of respite and at the University of Alaska that he found both his calling and a lifelong partner in Kay. \nIn the decades following his work in the Congo\, Schaller went on to conduct the earliest studies of Indian tigers\, Chinese pandas\, Asiatic Cheetah\, and Tibetan antelope\, meticulously cataloging their private lives. He navigated acute danger\, violent conflict\, and treacherous politics in pursuit of empathy for and preservation of creatures big and small. It was Schaller who first guided Jane Goodall on her chimp study in Tanzania and led Peter Matthiessen into Nepal in search of the snow leopard.
