SUMMARY:PRE-FESTIVAL EVENT: Fearless Science Forum - How do scientists know what they know
DESCRIPTION:How do scientists know what they know? In an era of competition for attention filled with rapid discoveries\, seemingly incredible claims and conflicting headlines\, understanding the path from a lab theory to an established fact is more vital than ever. \nJoin Morgridge CEO Brad Schwartz\, national leader in science policy Keith Yamamoto\, Director of the Morgridge Institute’s Rowe Center for Virology\, Paul Ahlquist\, and Morgridge Institute Investigator\, Melissa Skala as they peel back the curtain on the scientific method. Together we explore: \nProof: How observations turn into verified facts. \nThe Power of Mistake: Why failing\, replicating\, and peer-reviewing are among science’s greatest strengths. \nNavigating Uncertainty: How scientists make decisions when the data isn’t 100% clear. \nThe live and on-line session will conclude with an audience Q&A\, giving you the chance to ask your most pressing questions directly to our experts. \nA virtual broadcast via Zoom will also be available.

SUMMARY:WI Book Festival Author Event: Every Living Creature (Joshua Mezrich)
DESCRIPTION:October 15th\n7pm-8pm\nCentral Library – Lower-Level Program Room \nPresented in partnership with the Wisconsin Book Festival. \nWith more than 100\,000 patients in the United States waiting for life-saving organ transplants\, the shortage of organs will never be solved if someone must die for someone else to be saved. And yet a solution is well within reach—xenotransplantation\, or the transplanting of organs between different species—the once unimaginable scientific achievement that Joshua Mezrich explores in Every Living Creature. \nThe story begins with efforts using chimpanzees and baboons in the 60s through the 90s\, rife with ethical and practical complications and disappointments. The successful cloning of Dolly the sheep revived xeno-optimism\, followed by the discovery of CRISPR-Cas9\, which finally opened the door to xenotransplantation in humans\, using genetically modified pigs as organ donors. \nThe protagonists of this story are as incredible as the science it details: a transgender visionary\, the highest paid female CEO in the world\, who simply wants her daughter to live; the surgeon saved by a high-risk heart transplant\, who swears by the promise of pigs’ organs; the brilliant and brash surgeon-scientist-entrepreneur who is risking everything to make xenotransplantation a reality. Each plays a part in what is\, in the end\, the story of a miracle—not the answer to a prayer\, as Every Living Creature makes clear\, but a miracle we can breed. \nIn conversation with Dr. Margaret (Gretchen) Schwarze. \nCheck out more Wisconsin Book Festival & Wisconsin Science Festival partner events here!

SUMMARY:Craft/Work Exhibition Open House
DESCRIPTION:Join Ebling Library’s Curator of Historical Collections for an exhibition open house of “Craft/Work: A History of Occupational and Art Therapies.” Drawn from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s medical history collections\, the exhibition traces the intersections of psychiatry\, disability rights\, social work\, and art across three centuries to explore how art- and craftmaking affect our wellbeing. Craft/Work moves from the French Revolutionary origins of “moral treatment” in asylums to the emergence of occupational therapy from the Arts and Crafts and Settlement House movements to the surprising influence of Bauhaus emigrés on theories of art therapy. \nPlease note that the exhibition includes materials that depict graphic wartime injuries and full-frontal male nudity. Historical materials may also use outdated and potentially harmful language to refer to a variety of mental and physical disabilities. Please take care when attending. \nRecommended for PG13+ \n
