SUMMARY:SoundWaves: Origins - The Birth of Everything
DESCRIPTION:Where do we come from? Where does anything come from? This new series of SoundWaves brings together leading academic researchers and live music to explore origins at every scale – from the birth of the universe to the first human communities. Each edition pairs scholars from distinct disciplines with a musical program to answer the oldest questions we know. \nThis first SoundWaves event of the year launches our year-long exploration of Origins. Part of the Wisconsin Science Festival and Klez Fest Midwest\, this event looks at The Beginning of Everything. How did the universe come to be\, and how have scientists thought about the universe’s origins in the past? Special musical guests The Klezmatics\, perhaps the most important and popular klezmer band of all time\, will then look at the origins of klezmer music\, followed by a performance that will wow you. \nThis event is free but registration is required to ensure adequate seating. Reserve your free tickets here! \nThis event will take place in Collins Recital Hall in the Hamel Music Center.

SUMMARY:Crossroads of Ideas: Funding the Future of Science
DESCRIPTION:The Wisconsin Science Festival presents Crossroads of Ideas: Funding the Future of Science – How America Funds Discovery – Research\, Innovation\, and What Comes Next. \nHow we fund research shapes what questions get asked\, which ideas have the opportunity to grow\, and how discoveries move into the world. For decades\, the U.S. has relied heavily on a university-centered model\, but the landscape of research funding is evolving\, with new approaches and priorities emerging. \nJoin us for a conversation about the future of research funding in America. Panelists Sam Rikkers (Wisconsin Economic Development Corp.)\, Dorota Brzezinska (UW-Madison)\, and John Neis (Clarevia Ventures) will explore the opportunities and challenges of different models and consider what may be at stake for universities\, researchers\, industry\, and society as the nation rethinks how discovery is supported. Moderated by Maggie Brickerman (Wisconsin Technology Council) with opening remarks from Bassam Shakhashiri. \nRegistration is requested\, register here! This event will take place in the DeLuca Forum in the Discovery Building.

SUMMARY:WI Book Festival Author Event: A Little More Social - How Small Choices Create Unexpected Happiness\, Health\, and Connection (Nicholas Epley)
DESCRIPTION:October 18th\n1:30-2:30pm\nCentral Library – Lower-Level Program Room \nPresented in partnership with the Wisconsin Book Festival. \nThere is a paradox at the core of human life. We are a highly social species uniquely equipped to connect with other people and doing so is better for us. Yet we so often choose to be unsocial. We avoid talking to the stranger who sits next to us. We struggle to move beyond small talk with an acquaintance. We are reluctant to express our gratitude to people we appreciate. Every day\, we avoid opportunities to connect with strangers\, neighbors\, colleagues\, friends\, and family. By missing those moments\, we miss out on all the benefits of a more social life—one that is happier and healthier for everyone. \nUniversity of Chicago psychologist and author of Mindwise\, Nicholas Epley has spent his career studying the way we connect\, and he has found that our social fears often keep us from reaching out. But Epley shows us how to seize the small moments with insights such as: \n\nSocial connection is a choice we make based on expectations about how others will respond to us—expectations that tend to be overly pessimistic.\nIntroverts and extroverts alike benefit from choosing to be a little more social.\nMistaken expectations can cause us to avoid interacting in ways that create strong connections—such as having a conversation—in favor of less satisfying interactions—such as social media or texting.\nWhile many books promise one big fix\, making a habit of small connections is much more likely to improve your life.\nThe habits and practices that Epley advocates are approachable. The beauty of this book is that small acts have an outsized impact on the most important parts of our lives.\n\nBridging the gap between two people is easier than we think\, and success more likely\, if we choose to be a little more social. \nIn conversation with Shannon Henry Kleiber. \nCheck out more Wisconsin Book Festival & Wisconsin Science Festival partner events here!

SUMMARY:WI Book Festival Author Event: Zameen: Pakistani Roots\, Wisconsin Soil (Sultan Ahmed\, Kayla Gendron)
DESCRIPTION:October 18th\n12-1pm\nCentral Library\, Lower-Level Program Room \nPresented in partnership with the Wisconsin Book Festival. \nZameen means land\, and this cookbook is an argument firmly rooted in the soil upon which it was written.\n\nIn his debut cookbook\, chef Sultan Ahmed of Sultan Restaurant reimagines Pakistani cooking through the bounty of the Wisconsin landscape. Nihari is prepared with Wisconsin-farmed beef. Raitas are created using fresh Wisconsin yogurt. Combining techniques and inspiration from around the globe\, Zameen is a gateway into a bold new cosmopolitan cuisine.\nThese are not thirty-minute meals. Zameen asks you to slow down. Toast and grind your own spices\, braise slowly without an Insta-pot\, taste and adapt. Spices are measured in relative parts rather than fixed spoonfuls\, because no two jars of turmeric are ever the same\, and the only true judge of flavor is your palette. Great spice cookery is a conversation. \nOrganized around the Midwest growing year\, the recipes move through the seasons\, showcasing the bounty of Midwest agriculture throughout the year. The staple Friday fish fry is reimagined with Punjabi spices and sardines\, and the classic gulab jamun is enhanced with Wisconsin maple syrup. Each recipe is grounded in technique and intention\, paying respect to the cultures and cuisines which inspire the dish. \nZameen is a product of a first-generation Pakistani immigrant’s journey from a courtyard kitchen in Karachi to his own dining room in Wisconsin. It is a serious technical instruction in cooking which insists that Pakistani cuisine belongs among the great cooking traditions of the world. Food cannot be constrained by national borders. \nCheck out more Wisconsin Book Festival & Wisconsin Science Festival partner events here!

SUMMARY:WI Book Festival Author Event: Stone Age Astronaut (Liam Callanan)
DESCRIPTION:October 17th\n4:30-5:30pm\nCentral Library – Community Room 302 \nPresented in partnership with the Wisconsin Book Festival. \nAward-winning author Liam Callanan uncovers the astonishing life of Lester Maitland—the Milwaukee-born aviator who\, in 1927\, became the first person to fly to Hawaii\, earning national acclaim on par with Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic triumph. For a brief moment\, the two men shared headlines\, White House invitations\, and fame. But while Lindbergh’s legacy grew\, Maitland’s all but vanished. \nCallanan brings Maitland back into the spotlight\, tracing his meteoric early career: flight instructor at nineteen; one of the US Army’s first test pilots; the first American to fly faster than 200 mph; and the pioneering airman whose Pacific crossing earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross. \nJust twenty-two days after becoming Executive Officer of the Far East Air Service Command—and one day after Pearl Harbor—Maitland witnessed the destruction of much of the Far East Air Force in the Philippines. Later\, he commanded the 386th Bomb Group in Europe\, making him World War II’s oldest bomber pilot\, only to be abruptly and mysteriously retired weeks before D-Day. After the war\, Maitland experienced a series of professional and personal disappointments\, and he quietly faded into obscurity. He eventually became an Episcopal priest\, serving small parishes far from the glamour of his early days in the cockpit. \nThe pages of Stone Age Astronaut hum with the tension and excitement of early aviation\, rendered in a richly detailed narrative and Callanan’s research—spanning archives\, newspapers\, interviews\, and travel to key sites—to reveal the remarkable sweep of Lester Maitland’s world. Along the way\, readers encounter a constellation of notable figures\, including Amelia Earhart\, Billy Mitchell\, Ernest Hemingway\, Gerald Ford\, and Harry Houdini. With sparkling prose and a storyteller’s instinct for detail\, Callanan resurrects a man whose life intersected with major events\, eras\, and personalities—but who has inexplicably slipped through the cracks of American memory. A gripping portrait of ambition\, innovation\, fame\, failure\, and reinvention—and the enduring human urge to fly—Stone Age Astronaut ensures that Lester Maitland’s extraordinary story will no longer be forgotten. \nIn conversation with Jeff Oloizia. \nCheck out more Wisconsin Book Festival & Wisconsin Science Festival partner events here!

SUMMARY:WI Book Festival Author Event: A Womb of One's Own (Tara Mulder)
DESCRIPTION:October 17th\n3-4pm\nMadison Museum of Contemporary Art – Lecture Hall \nPresented in partnership with the Wisconsin Book Festival. \nPresented in partnership with the Wisconsin Science Festival. \nA bold new history of women’s health\, brought to life through ancient women’s stories of pregnancy and birth. \nIn the well-trod history of the Roman Empire\, a pivotal moment has long gone unnoticed: It was in ancient Rome that medical men first set their sights on childbirth\, the traditional domain of female midwives. \nTaking us to the dawn of Western obstetrics\, A Womb of One’s Own offers a feminist account of how\, against a long tradition of midwifery\, male doctors began claiming authority in reproductive matters\, with an emphasis on theoretical rather than practical knowledge. Their intrusion paved the way for the later criminalization of midwives and the cloaking of childbirth in secrecy and shame. \nYet communities of Roman women continued to help each other through the journey from preconception to postpartum\, guided by their own experience and the expertise of midwives. Tara Mulder recovers stories of ancient women living and resisting as they sought autonomy over their bodies and their health. Recounting their experiences in vivid\, intimate detail\, she reveals how old our modern conflicts about birth truly are. \nIn conversation with Kate Phelps. \nCheck out more Wisconsin Book Festival & Wisconsin Science Festival partner events here!
