DESCRIPTION:October 15th\n7pm-8pm\nCentral Library – Lower-Level Program Room \nPresented in partnership with the Wisconsin Book Festival. \nWith more than 100\,000 patients in the United States waiting for life-saving organ transplants\, the shortage of organs will never be solved if someone must die for someone else to be saved. And yet a solution is well within reach—xenotransplantation\, or the transplanting of organs between different species—the once unimaginable scientific achievement that Joshua Mezrich explores in Every Living Creature. \nThe story begins with efforts using chimpanzees and baboons in the 60s through the 90s\, rife with ethical and practical complications and disappointments. The successful cloning of Dolly the sheep revived xeno-optimism\, followed by the discovery of CRISPR-Cas9\, which finally opened the door to xenotransplantation in humans\, using genetically modified pigs as organ donors. \nThe protagonists of this story are as incredible as the science it details: a transgender visionary\, the highest paid female CEO in the world\, who simply wants her daughter to live; the surgeon saved by a high-risk heart transplant\, who swears by the promise of pigs’ organs; the brilliant and brash surgeon-scientist-entrepreneur who is risking everything to make xenotransplantation a reality. Not a botanist\, Lewis needed help to write this part of the journals. \nAmbition\, deceit\, theft\, wealth\, debt\, alcoholism\, loss\, suicide\, serendipity\, and stubborn persistence cross the plants’ paths in Philadelphia\, New York\, and London. This is the first work detailing the places\, practices\, and times of a cavalcade of people who touched the plants. Approaching the topic from varying perspectives—from medical to journalistic—Chin’s When Memory Fades and Kolker’s The Vanishing Family speak to the scientific\, emotional\, and social tolls of this complex disease. \nIn conversation with WPR host\, Lee Rayburn. \nWhen Memory Fades: What to Expect at Every Stage\, from Early Signs to Full Support for Alzheimer’s and Dementia is clear\, smart\, and cuts through the understandable impulse to deny symptoms and grasp at ineffective treatments. From the first concerns that something might be wrong right through to the toughest stages of the disease\, When Memory Fades provides granular information and frames topics that help readers figure out how to think about what’s happening. \nIn the idyllic American town of Pleasant Hills\, Pennsylvania\, there lived a family with nine siblings\, the youngest a girl named Barb. As the older children headed off to college and started their lives\, only Barb was home to see their beautiful\, still-young mother fall under a gothic spell\, changing into someone she didn’t recognize: withdrawn\, neglectful\, uncaring. Thus begins The Vanishing Family\, journalist Robert Kolker’s superb follow-up to Hidden Valley Road. This family\, we learn\, has a genetic mutation that causes dementia\, but with an especially cruel twist. As early as their forties\, formerly loving parents and hard-driving executives will lose their jobs\, have affairs\, take up drinking—shed all inhibitions and sense of responsibility—and become people their families hardly know. Pursuing the hidden wisdom of trees\, he scales to the very top of a giant sequoia while filming a nature documentary with David Attenborough; he treks through swamps in Papua to reach a treehouse-dwelling tribe of hunter-gatherers; and he journeys to a remote research camp in Tanzania\, where he spends a memorable night sleeping in a chimpanzee nest\, seeking to understand our deep evolutionary history. Eventually\, having gained a radical new outlook on both our gnarled past and our ever-branching future\, he joins an intrepid clan of climate activists risking everything to halt construction of a new oil pipeline and save an ancient forest. \nAlong the way\, Moor learns the art of “tree-thinking\,” which\, he discovers\, has the power to break open some of humanity’s oldest questions: What is the secret to truly growing old?
