Not a botanist\, Lewis needed help to write this part of the journals. \nAmbition\, deceit\, theft\, wealth\, debt\, alcoholism\, loss\, suicide\, serendipity\, and stubborn persistence cross the plants’ paths in Philadelphia\, New York\, and London. DESCRIPTION:Join us as we turn the library into the sci-brary. Engage in a variety of hands-on science activites presented by local scientists and sci-thuiasts. All ages are welcome. DESCRIPTION:This is a free\, in-person talk hosted on October 17\, 2026 at 1:00 PM by Iron Ridge Public Library in Iron Ridge\, WI. Registration is encouraged\, but not required. More info to come on how to register. There will be no virtual option for this event. This event is a part of the Wisconsin Science Festival!\n\nStudies show that feelings of belonging are the number one indicator of retention in STEM. The ability of students to see themselves in STEM spaces is crucial to building this sense of belonging. At the same time\, students are only able to envision themselves as scientists in as much as they are doing science. An ACORNS program is a highly interactive\, tactile STEM-themed activity. These could include modeling planet formation with ice cream and cookies\, exploring stellar fusion with the ingredients of s’mores\, and measuring the speed of light using a chocolate bar.\n\nThis shift from a lecture-style format to a hands-on\, student-led dialogue allows for an immersive STEM experience\, highlighting both that science can be fun\, accessible\, and messy\, but also that anyone is capable of doing it\, regardless of expertise. Science is a state of mind\, defined by curiosity–and every person has plenty of that.\n\nZach Lewis is a graduate student in astronomy at UW-Madison. His research focuses on the evolution of elements inside galaxies. He uses JWST observations of distant galaxies to characterize how stars produce elements and eject them into their host galaxy\, and how those elements then escape the galaxy or form new stars.

Rooted in this history\, visitors are encouraged to consider how design shapes the spaces where children play\, learn\, and explore. Interactive displays and replicated study scenarios invite visitors into the world of the Child Development Lab throughout its first 100 years\, with a focus on the research that takes place at every level in support of the social\, emotional\, and educational development of UW’s youngest students. \nThis exhibition is curated by Dr. Sarah Anne Carter\, Chipstone Foundation Design and Material Culture Chair\, Associate Professor of Design Studies\, and Executive Director of the Nancy M. Bruce Center for Design and Material Culture\, in collaboration with Saffron Gonzalez\, the Child Development Lab Centennial Project Coordinator\, and many generous colleagues in the Child Development Lab and Human Development and Family Studies Department. The Science of Human Thriving and its related programs are made possible with support from the Anonymous Fund\, many generous donors and partners who share the vision of the Nancy M. Approaching the topic from varying perspectives—from medical to journalistic—Chin’s When Memory Fades and Kolker’s The Vanishing Family speak to the scientific\, emotional\, and social tolls of this complex disease. \nIn conversation with WPR host\, Lee Rayburn. \nWhen Memory Fades: What to Expect at Every Stage\, from Early Signs to Full Support for Alzheimer’s and Dementia is clear\, smart\, and cuts through the understandable impulse to deny symptoms and grasp at ineffective treatments. From the first concerns that something might be wrong right through to the toughest stages of the disease\, When Memory Fades provides granular information and frames topics that help readers figure out how to think about what’s happening. \nIn the idyllic American town of Pleasant Hills\, Pennsylvania\, there lived a family with nine siblings\, the youngest a girl named Barb. As the older children headed off to college and started their lives\, only Barb was home to see their beautiful\, still-young mother fall under a gothic spell\, changing into someone she didn’t recognize: withdrawn\, neglectful\, uncaring. Pursuing the hidden wisdom of trees\, he scales to the very top of a giant sequoia while filming a nature documentary with David Attenborough; he treks through swamps in Papua to reach a treehouse-dwelling tribe of hunter-gatherers; and he journeys to a remote research camp in Tanzania\, where he spends a memorable night sleeping in a chimpanzee nest\, seeking to understand our deep evolutionary history. DESCRIPTION:October 17th\n3-4pm\nMadison Museum of Contemporary Art – Lecture Hall \nPresented in partnership with the Wisconsin Book Festival. \nPresented in partnership with the Wisconsin Science Festival. \nA bold new history of women’s health\, brought to life through ancient women’s stories of pregnancy and birth. \nIn the well-trod history of the Roman Empire\, a pivotal moment has long gone unnoticed: It was in ancient Rome that medical men first set their sights on childbirth\, the traditional domain of female midwives. \nTaking us to the dawn of Western obstetrics\, A Womb of One’s Own offers a feminist account of how\, against a long tradition of midwifery\, male doctors began claiming authority in reproductive matters\, with an emphasis on theoretical rather than practical knowledge. Their intrusion paved the way for the later criminalization of midwives and the cloaking of childbirth in secrecy and shame. \nYet communities of Roman women continued to help each other through the journey from preconception to postpartum\, guided by their own experience and the expertise of midwives. Tara Mulder recovers stories of ancient women living and resisting as they sought autonomy over their bodies and their health. DESCRIPTION:October 17th\n4:30-5:30pm\nCentral Library – Community Room 302 \nPresented in partnership with the Wisconsin Book Festival. \nAward-winning author Liam Callanan uncovers the astonishing life of Lester Maitland—the Milwaukee-born aviator who\, in 1927\, became the first person to fly to Hawaii\, earning national acclaim on par with Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic triumph. For a brief moment\, the two men shared headlines\, White House invitations\, and fame. But while Lindbergh’s legacy grew\, Maitland’s all but vanished. \nCallanan brings Maitland back into the spotlight\, tracing his meteoric early career: flight instructor at nineteen; one of the US Army’s first test pilots; the first American to fly faster than 200 mph; and the pioneering airman whose Pacific crossing earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross. \nJust twenty-two days after becoming Executive Officer of the Far East Air Service Command—and one day after Pearl Harbor—Maitland witnessed the destruction of much of the Far East Air Force in the Philippines. Later\, he commanded the 386th Bomb Group in Europe\, making him World War II’s oldest bomber pilot\, only to be abruptly and mysteriously retired weeks before D-Day. SUMMARY:Washburn Observatory Open House
DESCRIPTION:We will be opening the Observatory to the public regardless of weather\, though we hope for favorable weather so we can use the telescope to look at some astronomical objects! Come see the historic 15.6″ Clark refractor and enjoy the view of the night sky atop beautiful Observatory Hill\, following traditions of our ancestors for over 10\,000 years. The dome is open to the outside air so dress appropriately. Food and drinks\, as well as flash photography are not allowed in the observatory. \nIn the event that weather is not favorable on the 17th\, the Observatory will be open on October 24th from 7-10pm.

DESCRIPTION:Off Book – The Improvised Musical is coming to Madison! Comedians Jessica McKenna and Zach Reino create a completely improvised musical in an attempt to combat the notion that musicals should be “carefully crafted” or “thought out at all.” This show will have a special science theme in celebration of the Wisconsin Science Festival so come ready to yes\, and…science! Show starts at 8pm at the Barrymore Theatre. GA doors open at 7pm. \nPurchase your tickets here! \nZach Reino and Jessica McKenna are a versatile musical comedy duo. They wrote and composed music for the WGA award-winning Peacock Series Baking It starring Maya Rudolph\, Amy Poehler and Andy Samberg. The duo has also written songs and musical sketches for the hit animation show Rick and Morty\, Party Over Here (a Fox sketch show produced by The Lonely Island)\, the Peacock series Pitch Perfect: Bumper In Berlin\, Buzzfeed\, FunnyOrDie and Nickelodeon. Zach and Jess are currently developing TV and Film projects with Amy Poehler’s Paper Kite Productions\, David Wain (The State\, Role Models\, Wanderlust) and Elizabeth Banks’ Brownstone Productions. They also created and starred in Serious Music\, a digital series for ABC.  \nTheir improvised musical podcast Off Book has been praised by various online publications including Indie Wire\, USA Today\, Parade\, AV Club and Splitsider and been featured at Comedy Central’s Clusterfest Festival\, Moontower\, the world renowned Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal\, and the Netflix Is A Joke Festival in LA. Zach and Jess were listed as one of Vulture’s “Comedians You Should and Will Know” and in early 2019 they released their first full-length musical comedy album The Calendar Album with Comedy Dynamics.
