SUMMARY:Nature Scavenger Hunt at Freedom Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Prescott Public Library for a Nature Scavenger Hunt as part of the Wisconsin Science Festival BioBlitz! Take pictures of what you find on your hike and submit it to iNaturalist\, a community citizen science app. It may seem like fun and games (which it definitely is!)\, but we are also collecting important data for scientists to use for their research! There will be a raffle and freebies available for attendees to take home as well. \nThis program will be located at Freedom Park (200 Monroe St\, Prescott\, WI 54021). \nHot chocolate and water will be provided for attendees. Trails are paved and include a lookout with binocular scopes for a great view of the Mississippi River confluence. Need a set of binoculars\, field guide\, or park pack before you explore? Check out our list of materials you can check out with your library card to prepare you for a bioblitz >> more.bibliocommons.com/v2/list/display/1981062299/2775885697 \nLearn more about the BioBlitz here >> https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/wisconsin-science-festival-bioblitz-2026

SUMMARY:Tiny Bee. Big Deal. - Searching Treinen Farm for the Rusty Patched Bumblebee
DESCRIPTION:There’s a tiny endangered neighbor living in Wisconsin—and you might walk right past one without ever knowing it. \nMeet the rusty patched bumble bee\, one of Wisconsin’s native bumble bees and the first bumble bee species in the United States to receive federal protection under the Endangered Species Act. \nThen head outside and explore the kind of world a bumble bee needs. \nAt Treinen Farm in Lodi\, Wisconsin\, our 2026 corn maze theme\, The Birds and the Bees\, takes guests into the wonderfully strange science of pollination\, reproduction\, biodiversity\, birds\, bees\, and the many ways living things depend on one another. \nBeyond the corn maze\, explore our restored prairie and oak savanna and look more closely at the flowers\, insects\, birds\, and habitats around you. Why do native flowers matter? Where do bumble bees spend the winter? What does a bee need besides flowers? And just what is that “rusty patch\,” anyway? \nCome get lost in the maze—and leave looking at the little things around you differently. \nWho: All ages are welcome. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.\nAdmission: Regular Treinen Farm admission applies. Children ages 2 and under are free.\nTickets: https://www.treinenfarm.com\nLocation: Treinen Farm Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch\, Lodi\, Wisconsin\nParking: Free parking is available at the farm. \nThis is an outdoor event on a working farm. Dress for the weather and wear shoes ready for grass\, dirt\, gravel\, and possibly mud. \nSpecial event on October 24th – checkout the Einstein Project Mobile Design Lab and build your own bee from 3D-printed and laser-cut materials!

SUMMARY:WI Book Festival Author Event: Spooky Rivers (Geo Rutherford)
DESCRIPTION:October 16th\n7:30-8:30pm\nDeLuca Forum\, Discovery Building \nPresented in partnership with the Wisconsin Book Festival. \nTake the plunge into the strangest\, spookiest\, and most fascinating rivers around the world (if you dare) in this beautifully illustrated companion to Spooky Lakes—the New York Times and Indiebound bestseller from TikTok star and educator Geo Rutherford. \nFrom Geo Rutherford—the creator of the hit series Spooky Lake Month (over 79 million likes!)—comes this thrilling nonfiction book that follows the winding histories of 25 mysterious rivers around the world. Readers will explore natural phenomena\, scientific oddities\, historical events\, and environmental disasters\, as well as the myths and legends tied to these waterways\, which are increasingly threatened by climate change. \nRivers are Earth’s restless travelers—carving landscapes\, shaping history\, and holding secrets. Some are forces of destruction\, sweeping away everything in their path\, while others are lifelines\, sustaining civilizations for millennia. And some are both\, bringing prosperity and devastation in equal measure. \nFrom deadly whirlpools to lost cities submerged beneath their waves\, these rivers challenge everything we think we know about the natural world. There are rivers that catch fire\, rivers that boil\, and rivers so deep they seem bottomless. Some slither beneath the ground you stand on\, while others vanish without a trace. \nWho knew rivers could be so . . . spooky? \nIn conversation with Anne Moser. \nCheck out more Wisconsin Book Festival & Wisconsin Science Festival partner events here! \nPlease note that there is a home Badger volleyball game at the Field House on October 16 evening\, which will likely affect parking availability and pricing. Please plan accordingly\, arrive early and consider alternative transportation than driving your own vehicle.

SUMMARY:WI Book Festival Author Event: Hidden Creatures (Dino Martins)
DESCRIPTION:October 16th\n6-7pm\nDeLuca Forum\, Discovery Building \nPresented in partnership with the Wisconsin Book Festival. \nThere is the tapeworm\, which can grow 120 feet in length within the gut of a whale; the tsetse fly\, a notorious vector of disease that can pierce the skin even of crocodiles with its needle-like mouth; and the most universal symbol of parasitic behavior: the leech. Long villainized as\, well\, parasitic\, these creatures are actually a vital part of every ecosystem—and Dr. Dino Martins\, an award-winning entomologist and biologist from Kenya\, has made it his life’s mission to demystify these beguiling beings. \nHidden Creatures is a journey around the world ten times over—from Martins’ home in the wilds of East Africa\, to the rainforests of the Amazon\, to cities and backyards across the globe—and along the way\, we encounter the brilliant and eccentric experts who join Martins on his adventures to investigate not only parasites but their hosts\, from hyraxes and hippos to\, of course\, humans. Immersive\, driven by an utterly infectious curiosity\, and sure to transform every reader’s understanding of these organisms\, Hidden Creatures has the magnetic force of a David Attenborough documentary and introduces a monumental\, charismatic new voice in science writing. \nIn conversation with Lyric Bartholomay. \nCheck out more Wisconsin Book Festival & Wisconsin Science Festival partner events here! \nPlease note that there is a home Badger volleyball game at the Field House on October 16 evening\, which will likely affect parking availability and pricing. SUMMARY:WI Book Festival Author Event: The Best Science Stories and How They Work (Siri Carpenter)
DESCRIPTION:October 16th\n4:30-5:30pm\nDeLuca Forum\, Discovery Building \nPresented in partnership with the Wisconsin Book Festival. \nAn invitation to engage with some of today’s most respected science journalists as they take readers beneath the surface to tell the stories behind eleven of the best science stories. \nWith eleven deeply reported\, artfully crafted stories and annotations by some of the most thoughtful and respected science journalists working today\, The Best Science Stories and How They Work is more than the sum of its impressive parts. Experience the pleasure of reading a “Best of” anthology\, attending a science writing masterclass\, and meeting journalists who become more than their familiar bylines. Each piece benefits from an introduction\, annotations\, and a conversation between the piece’s author and annotator. \nSiri Carpenter—editor of this book and cofounder of The Open Notebook\, a leading source of training and educational materials for journalists who cover science—has long considered what’s behind the best writing. The pieces in this guide are drawn from a range of publications such as Scientific American\, Nature\, The Atlantic\, and The New York Times Magazine and offer a unique perspective on how great science journalism happens: the careful structuring of a narrative\, the delicate balance of skepticism and wonder\, the ethical challenges of working with sources\, the artistry of prose that sings. Readers will not only encounter outstanding examples of stellar storytelling\, but they will also understand how these successful stories were reported and written\, revealing the choices fundamental to good science journalism. Following each annotation\, a Q&A with the original author provides an intimate look at the decisions and challenges that shaped their work. \nTaken together\, these pieces and annotations reveal the detailed\, technical narrative work required to tell science stories. The book will delight\, inspire\, and equip readers with new tools to appreciate the stories that matter most. \nContributors: Jordana Cepelewicz\, Shraddha Chakradhar\, Nadia Drake\, Ben Goldfarb\, Sabrina Imbler\, Ferris Jabr\, Emily Laber-Warren\, Stephanie M. Lee\, Dana Mackenzie\, Amy Maxmen\, Emiliano Rodríguez Mega\, Kendra Pierre-Louis\, Debbie Ponchner\, Sandeep Ravindran\, Mary Roach\, Paola Rosa-Aquino\, Ashley Smart\, Jessica Seigel\, Ramin Skibba\, Kamala Thiagarajan\, Bijal Trivedi\, and Ed Yong \nIn conversation with Will Cushman.
