SUMMARY:Tales from Planet Earth - A Wilderness Act
DESCRIPTION:What does “wilderness” mean to you? Join us for a free screening and panel discussion of the award-winning short documentary film\, A Wilderness Act. Guided by the wisdom of Anishinaabe graduate student Nisogaabokwe Melonee Montano and university professor Evan Larson\, learn how the very definitions penned to protect our country’s most precious landscapes can instead perpetuate injustice and lead to the impoverishment of both ecosystems and human cultures. Inspired by the Red Pine forests of the Great Lakes area\, including Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area\, the two join together to educate current and future generations about how returning fire to the land\, and returning the land to its people\, can be healing for all. \nPresented in partnership with the Nelson Institue for Environmental Studies and the Foundation for Dane County Parks. \nAgenda (feel free to attend one or all of these activties) \n3:30–4:30 p.m. Join us for family-friendly programming to explore the cultural and ecological importance of fire:\nStorytime: Reading of Ishkode: A Story of Fire with Nisogaabokwe Melonee Montano\nLearn about fire! What does fire need to exist? When is it safe? What changes can fire make? \n4:45–5:15 p.m. Guided walk: Explore the Wisconsin landscape through fire. Join voices from the film on a walk through Lake Farm County Park and learn about the landscape as it relates to fire. \n5:30 – 7 pm Screening & Panel\nJoin us for free pizza before the film and a fire gathering with s’mores afterwards. Registration recommended. \nAccessibility and Language Access: \nWheelchair accessible\nAccessible parking and level walkway to building\nMen’s\, Women’s and All-Gender\, indoor\, ADA compliant bathrooms\nDrinking water access\nOur department is committed to providing meaningful access to our programs and resources to all individuals\, regardless of primary language or ability. SUMMARY:POST-FESTIVAL EVENT: Badgers on Tap - Día de los Muertos at Cielo in Madison\, WI
DESCRIPTION:Join Cielo on State Street for a Badgers on Tap event on October 28\, 2026 at 6:30 PM to learn about Día de los Muertos! There will be a screening of the short film “La Vida y Los Muertos” by Carolyn Kallenborn\, followed by a discussion with the speaker herself (she will participate via Zoom). This event is a part of the Wisconsin Science Festival! \nLa Vida y Los Muertos is filled with rich visuals and captivating music to evoke the beauty\, joy\, sadness and magic of the Day of the Dead in Oaxaca\, Mexico. The film winds its way from the funky urban feel of the city of Oaxaca\, through the intimate home altars in Teotitlan and Mitla\, the enchanting candle-lit midnight cemetery of Atzompa\, and the joyous flower covered graves in San Antonino. La Vida y Los Muertos is a “silent” film with no narration\, inviting the audience to immerse themselves in the music and the imagery to experience a slowing down of time that is an inherent part of the festival. The film provides an opportunity to notice the care and thoughtfulness of the preparations and to experience the joyous celebration of life. \nAs an art film\, La Vida y Los Muertos is a journey through the city of Oaxaca and five near-by villages during the celebration of Day of the Dead. In the city and in the villages\, this beautiful festival of death is very lively. The juxtaposition of music\, food and celebration with cemeteries and death is surreal. With little narration\, rich visuals and complex soundtrack\, each chapter captures the mood and the impression of one particular place.
