And yet a solution is well within reach—xenotransplantation\, or the transplanting of organs between different species—the once unimaginable scientific achievement that Joshua Mezrich explores in Every Living Creature. \nThe story begins with efforts using chimpanzees and baboons in the 60s through the 90s\, rife with ethical and practical complications and disappointments. The successful cloning of Dolly the sheep revived xeno-optimism\, followed by the discovery of CRISPR-Cas9\, which finally opened the door to xenotransplantation in humans\, using genetically modified pigs as organ donors. \nThe protagonists of this story are as incredible as the science it details: a transgender visionary\, the highest paid female CEO in the world\, who simply wants her daughter to live; the surgeon saved by a high-risk heart transplant\, who swears by the promise of pigs’ organs; the brilliant and brash surgeon-scientist-entrepreneur who is risking everything to make xenotransplantation a reality. DESCRIPTION:School’s out! Come spend the day outdoors at the Lussier Heritage Center. Youth will spend the day exploring outside through a variety of activities including possibly prairie adventures\, canoeing\, fishing\, fort building\, snowshoeing\, sledding\, and more! Activities will be based on weather and time of year. A snack will be provided. Please pack an extra pair of clothes\, weather appropriate clothes\, closed toed shoes\, and a lunch. Lunch will not be provided. This talk will not be available virtually.\n\nPlease register with this link: https://tinyurl.com/yv46e4y6\n\nThis talk covers common skin conditions that show up as people age including common benign skin growths\, when to worry about skin cancer\, how to navigate dry skin and itch.\n\nDr. Bodemer is a professor of dermatology and is board certified in Dermatology\, Integrative Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine. She serves as core faculty for the Integrative Dermatology Certificate Program as well as other educational programsthrough LearnSkin. She has authored chapters on Integrative Dermatology in key textbooks and written curriculum for the University of Arizona Integrative Medicine program as well as for the National Veterans Association Whole Health Initiative. Dr. Bodemer is passionate about community education and outreach and has worked with several media platforms as well as organizations including The Plantrician Project\, The Food Revolution Network\, and MindBodyGreen.
