SUMMARY:Washburn Observatory Open House
DESCRIPTION:We will be opening the Observatory to the public regardless of weather\, though we hope for favorable weather so we can use the telescope to look at some astronomical objects! Come see the historic 15.6″ Clark refractor and enjoy the view of the night sky atop beautiful Observatory Hill\, following traditions of our ancestors for over 10\,000 years. The dome is open to the outside air so dress appropriately. Food and drinks\, as well as flash photography are not allowed in the observatory. \nIn the event that weather is not favorable on the 17th\, the Observatory will be open on October 24th from 7-10pm.

SUMMARY:The Science of Human Thriving: Celebrating 100 Years of the Child Development Lab
DESCRIPTION:The Science of Human Thriving: Celebrating 100 Years of the Child Development Lab exhibits the innovative\, research-based work of University of Wisconsin–Madison teachers\, faculty\, scholars\, and students in the science of early relational health. Rooted in this history\, visitors are encouraged to consider how design shapes the spaces where children play\, learn\, and explore. Interactive displays and replicated study scenarios invite visitors into the world of the Child Development Lab throughout its first 100 years\, with a focus on the research that takes place at every level in support of the social\, emotional\, and educational development of UW’s youngest students. \nThis exhibition is curated by Dr. Sarah Anne Carter\, Chipstone Foundation Design and Material Culture Chair\, Associate Professor of Design Studies\, and Executive Director of the Nancy M. Bruce Center for Design and Material Culture\, in collaboration with Saffron Gonzalez\, the Child Development Lab Centennial Project Coordinator\, and many generous colleagues in the Child Development Lab and Human Development and Family Studies Department. The Science of Human Thriving and its related programs are made possible with support from the Anonymous Fund\, many generous donors and partners who share the vision of the Nancy M. Bruce Center for Design and Material Culture\, and the School of Human Ecology. The center creates meaningful opportunities for students\, faculty\, and the broader community to engage with textiles\, design\, and material culture. \nIn 2026\, University of Wisconsin–Madison’s School of Human Ecology is marking 100 years of its Child Development Lab\, among the first university-based preschool laboratories of its kind in the U.S.\, and celebrating its leading role in the field of early relational health. DESCRIPTION:This is a free\, in-person talk hosted on October 25\, 2026 at 1:00 PM by La Crosse County Historical Society and the Nature Place in La Crosse\, WI. No registration required. This talk will not be available virtually.\n\nWisconsin is home to 500 kinds of native bees! Discover the diversity and life histories of these important pollinators. Learn how you can create and manage habitat for them\, using native plants and bee-friendly gardening practices.\n\nSusan Carpenter is the Native Plant Garden curator and gardener at the University of Wisconsin–Madison Arboretum. Since 2003\, she has worked with students and community volunteers to maintain and monitor a 4-acre garden representing the plant communities of southern Wisconsin. She also leads a conservation project that involves students and the public in documenting and studying native bumble bees\, including the endangered rusty-patched bumble bee\, Bombus affinis. A graduate of Stanford University\, Susan earned her MS in Botany and MS in Science Education at UW–Madison. Her professional interests include plant ecology\, ecological restoration\, pollinator conservation\, and science education.

DESCRIPTION:This is a free\, in-person Badger Talk Workshop hosted on October 26\, 2026 at 3:30 PM by Eager Free Public Library in Evansville\, WI. More information to come on registration. This event will not be available virtually.\n\nThe Alien Blood crime scene investigation is a time-tested activity that engages students in the act of empirical science through use of standard molecular biology tools and techniques that include micropipettes and gel electrophoresis.\n\nElizabeth (Liz) Jesse is a Science Outreach Specialist at the UW Biotechnology Center. Liz worked as a middle and high school classroom teacher for ten years\, at both public and public charter schools in the Sheboygan Area. She also has experience working in the private sector as a pharmaceutical lab technician. Liz’s outreach focuses on designing and implementing curriculum for biology and chemistry workshops for the public with an emphasis on K-12 students. Liz is an active member of the UW Madison Science Alliance group. She is also on the planning committee for the Science Expeditions campus open house and the Madison Expanding Your Horizons girls’ STEM conference.

DESCRIPTION:Join Cielo on State Street for a Badgers on Tap event on October 28\, 2026 at 6:30 PM to learn about Día de los Muertos! There will be a screening of the short film “La Vida y Los Muertos” by Carolyn Kallenborn\, followed by a discussion with the speaker herself (she will participate via Zoom). This event is a part of the Wisconsin Science Festival! \nLa Vida y Los Muertos is filled with rich visuals and captivating music to evoke the beauty\, joy\, sadness and magic of the Day of the Dead in Oaxaca\, Mexico. The film winds its way from the funky urban feel of the city of Oaxaca\, through the intimate home altars in Teotitlan and Mitla\, the enchanting candle-lit midnight cemetery of Atzompa\, and the joyous flower covered graves in San Antonino. La Vida y Los Muertos is a “silent” film with no narration\, inviting the audience to immerse themselves in the music and the imagery to experience a slowing down of time that is an inherent part of the festival. The film provides an opportunity to notice the care and thoughtfulness of the preparations and to experience the joyous celebration of life. \nAs an art film\, La Vida y Los Muertos is a journey through the city of Oaxaca and five near-by villages during the celebration of Day of the Dead. In the city and in the villages\, this beautiful festival of death is very lively. The juxtaposition of music\, food and celebration with cemeteries and death is surreal. With little narration\, rich visuals and complex soundtrack\, each chapter captures the mood and the impression of one particular place.
