DESCRIPTION:This is a free\, in-person talk hosted on October 20\, 2026 at 6:00 PM by Columbus Public Library in Columbus\, WI. There will be a virtual option for this event. Registration is required to attend via Zoom and is preferred for in-person attendance. Please register by calling (920)-623-5910 or through the library’s website. \nInterstellar clouds house the ingredients that become building blocks for new stars and planets. Understanding how molecules form in these regions gives us clues about how life on Earth may have started\, and where life might exist elsewhere in the Universe. \nSusanna Widicus Weaver\, Vozza Professor of Chemistry and Astronomy at the University of Wisconsin\, is an expert in prebiotic astrochemistry. Her research\, combining laboratory spectroscopy\, observational astronomy\, and chemical modeling\, is aimed at understanding the mechanisms driving interstellar chemistry and the pathways for the formation of life. She received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Illinois Wesleyan University (2000) and her Ph.D. in chemistry at Caltech (2005). She was a postdoctoral fellow in Chemistry and Astronomy at the University of Illinois from 2005-2008. Before moving to Wisconsin\, she was a Professor of Chemistry at Emory University.

This new series of SoundWaves brings together leading academic researchers and live music to explore origins at every scale – from the birth of the universe to the first human communities. Each edition pairs scholars from distinct disciplines with a musical program to answer the oldest questions we know. \nThis first SoundWaves event of the year launches our year-long exploration of Origins. Part of the Wisconsin Science Festival and Klez Fest Midwest\, this event looks at The Beginning of Everything. How did the universe come to be\, and how have scientists thought about the universe’s origins in the past? Special musical guests The Klezmatics\, perhaps the most important and popular klezmer band of all time\, will then look at the origins of klezmer music\, followed by a performance that will wow you. \nThis event is free but registration is required to ensure adequate seating. DESCRIPTION:This is a free\, in-person Badger Talk Workshop hosted on October 26\, 2026 at 3:30 PM by Eager Free Public Library in Evansville\, WI. More information to come on registration. This event will not be available virtually.\n\nThe Alien Blood crime scene investigation is a time-tested activity that engages students in the act of empirical science through use of standard molecular biology tools and techniques that include micropipettes and gel electrophoresis.\n\nElizabeth (Liz) Jesse is a Science Outreach Specialist at the UW Biotechnology Center. Liz worked as a middle and high school classroom teacher for ten years\, at both public and public charter schools in the Sheboygan Area. She also has experience working in the private sector as a pharmaceutical lab technician. Liz’s outreach focuses on designing and implementing curriculum for biology and chemistry workshops for the public with an emphasis on K-12 students. Liz is an active member of the UW Madison Science Alliance group. She is also on the planning committee for the Science Expeditions campus open house and the Madison Expanding Your Horizons girls’ STEM conference.
