SUMMARY:Badger Talk - ACORNS (Activities for Community Outreach in STEM)
DESCRIPTION:This is a free\, in-person talk hosted on October 17\, 2026 at 1:00 PM by Iron Ridge Public Library in Iron Ridge\, WI. Registration is encouraged\, but not required. More info to come on how to register. There will be no virtual option for this event. This event is a part of the Wisconsin Science Festival! \nStudies show that feelings of belonging are the number one indicator of retention in STEM. The ability of students to see themselves in STEM spaces is crucial to building this sense of belonging. At the same time\, students are only able to envision themselves as scientists in as much as they are doing science. An ACORNS program is a highly interactive\, tactile STEM-themed activity. These could include modeling planet formation with ice cream and cookies\, exploring stellar fusion with the ingredients of s’mores\, and measuring the speed of light using a chocolate bar. \nThis shift from a lecture-style format to a hands-on\, student-led dialogue allows for an immersive STEM experience\, highlighting both that science can be fun\, accessible\, and messy\, but also that anyone is capable of doing it\, regardless of expertise. Science is a state of mind\, defined by curiosity–and every person has plenty of that. \nZach Lewis is a graduate student in astronomy at UW-Madison. His research focuses on the evolution of elements inside galaxies. He uses JWST observations of distant galaxies to characterize how stars produce elements and eject them into their host galaxy\, and how those elements then escape the galaxy or form new stars. \nRegistration link coming soon!

SUMMARY:Scientists in all of US
DESCRIPTION:There is a Scientist in all of us! Join us at the Pauline Haass Public Library to discover the science hidden in everyday life. We’re bringing science “down to earth” as we learn to think like scientists about the big and small things we do every day.\nWe’ll also explore how our local community helpers use science to get the job done! Have you ever wondered how science keeps us safe\, helps us cook a meal\, gets us from place to place\, or keeps us healthy? Here is your chance to turn that curiosity into discovery!

SUMMARY:SoundWaves: Origins - The Birth of Everything
DESCRIPTION:Where do we come from? Where does anything come from? This new series of SoundWaves brings together leading academic researchers and live music to explore origins at every scale – from the birth of the universe to the first human communities. Each edition pairs scholars from distinct disciplines with a musical program to answer the oldest questions we know. \nThis first SoundWaves event of the year launches our year-long exploration of Origins. Part of the Wisconsin Science Festival and Klez Fest Midwest\, this event looks at The Beginning of Everything. How did the universe come to be\, and how have scientists thought about the universe’s origins in the past? Special musical guests The Klezmatics\, perhaps the most important and popular klezmer band of all time\, will then look at the origins of klezmer music\, followed by a performance that will wow you. \nThis event is free but registration is required to ensure adequate seating. Reserve your free tickets here! \nThis event will take place in Collins Recital Hall in the Hamel Music Center.
