This talk will not be available virtually.\n\nBirds have captured every corner of our planet. Long before modern birds appeared\, some dinosaurs started to show feathers rather than scales. With the help of powerful X-rays\, we are trying to disentangle the chemical remains in some of the most iconic dino-bird fossils\, including the famous Archaeopteryx\, and what we can learn about the life of these amazing creatures.\n\nUwe Bergmann is a Professor in the Physics Department of UW-Madison. He specializes on the development and application of novel X-ray techniques based on the most powerful x-ray sources. He has studies ancient manuscripts including the Archimedes Palimpsest\, fossils\, water\, and how plants split water to produce the oxygen we breath.

Bonnie has a Master’s in Family Studies & Human Development from UW-Stout. Her focus is on Dementia Care and Caregiver Research. DESCRIPTION:Join Ebling Library’s Curator of Historical Collections for an exhibition open house of “Craft/Work: A History of Occupational and Art Therapies.” Drawn from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s medical history collections\, the exhibition traces the intersections of psychiatry\, disability rights\, social work\, and art across three centuries to explore how art- and craftmaking affect our wellbeing. Craft/Work moves from the French Revolutionary origins of “moral treatment” in asylums to the emergence of occupational therapy from the Arts and Crafts and Settlement House movements to the surprising influence of Bauhaus emigrés on theories of art therapy. \nPlease note that the exhibition includes materials that depict graphic wartime injuries and full-frontal male nudity. DESCRIPTION:This is a free\, in-person talk hosted on October 17\, 2026 at 1:00 PM by Iron Ridge Public Library in Iron Ridge\, WI. Registration is encouraged\, but not required. More info to come on how to register. There will be no virtual option for this event. This event is a part of the Wisconsin Science Festival!\n\nStudies show that feelings of belonging are the number one indicator of retention in STEM. The ability of students to see themselves in STEM spaces is crucial to building this sense of belonging. At the same time\, students are only able to envision themselves as scientists in as much as they are doing science. An ACORNS program is a highly interactive\, tactile STEM-themed activity. These could include modeling planet formation with ice cream and cookies\, exploring stellar fusion with the ingredients of s’mores\, and measuring the speed of light using a chocolate bar.\n\nThis shift from a lecture-style format to a hands-on\, student-led dialogue allows for an immersive STEM experience\, highlighting both that science can be fun\, accessible\, and messy\, but also that anyone is capable of doing it\, regardless of expertise. Science is a state of mind\, defined by curiosity–and every person has plenty of that.\n\nZach Lewis is a graduate student in astronomy at UW-Madison. His research focuses on the evolution of elements inside galaxies. He uses JWST observations of distant galaxies to characterize how stars produce elements and eject them into their host galaxy\, and how those elements then escape the galaxy or form new stars.

This talk will not be held virtually.\n\nThere is no doubt that human-caused climate change is occurring. But\, some of the worst case scenarios are overblown\, over-hyped\, or bad science. Ankur Desai will review what we know to date about climate change impacts in Wisconsin and the work his lab and others have done to understand how we can mitigate or adapt to these effects while also preserving and improving our quality of life.\n\nAnkur Desai is a Professor of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the UW–Madison. He studies how ecosystems respond to climate variability and how the climate responds to ecological patterns and processes.

Understanding how molecules form in these regions gives us clues about how life on Earth may have started\, and where life might exist elsewhere in the Universe. \nSusanna Widicus Weaver\, Vozza Professor of Chemistry and Astronomy at the University of Wisconsin\, is an expert in prebiotic astrochemistry. Her research\, combining laboratory spectroscopy\, observational astronomy\, and chemical modeling\, is aimed at understanding the mechanisms driving interstellar chemistry and the pathways for the formation of life. She received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Illinois Wesleyan University (2000) and her Ph.D. in chemistry at Caltech (2005). She was a postdoctoral fellow in Chemistry and Astronomy at the University of Illinois from 2005-2008. Before moving to Wisconsin\, she was a Professor of Chemistry at Emory University.

This talk will be available virtually. \nUse this link to register: https://www.uwlax.edu/gel/dementia-caregiver-resources/\nThe presentation will look at family caregiver burnout\, self-care\, and strategies to minimize the risk of burnout when caring for someone living with Alzheimer’s dementia. \nJody Krainer is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker that practiced at a large medical and behavioral healthcare system in Waukesha for twenty years. She also has advanced education and experience in business and worked as an executive in a large community-based nonprofit in the inner city of Milwaukee for six years. Jody joined the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute at the School of Medicine and Public Health (UW-Madison) in 2016 as the Dementia Diagnostic Clinic Network Manager. In May of 2021\, Jody also assumed leadership responsibilities for WAI’s Wisconsin Dementia Resource Network.

SUMMARY:Badger Talk: The German Presence in Wisconsin
DESCRIPTION:This is a free\, in-person talk hosted on October 22\, 2026 at 10:30 AM by Janesville Senior Activity Center in Janesville\, WI. More information to come on registration. There will be no virtual option. \nIn this talk Professor Louden will provide an overview of the impact that German-speaking immigrants and their descendants have had in shaping the life and culture of Wisconsin\, from the nineteenth century to the present. \nMark Louden is a linguist who received his training in Germanic linguistics at Cornell University. A fluent speaker of Pennsylvania Dutch\, he has published extensively on this language and other German-American varieties\, as well as Yiddish. In addition to his position as the Alfred L. Shoemaker\, J. William Frey\, and Don Yoder Professor of Germanic Linguistics in the Department of German\, Nordic\, and Slavic+\, he directs the Max Kade Institute for German-American Studies and is affiliated with the Religious Studies and Language Sciences programs and the Mosse/Weinstein Center for Jewish Studies. He serves as an interpreter and cultural mediator for Plain people (Amish and traditional Mennonites) in multiple settings\, especially health care.

No registration required. This talk will not be available virtually. \nOnce a creature of nursery rhymes\, bed bugs have reemerged around the US over the last decades. This talk will discuss the biology of bed bugs\, their history\, precautions for travelers\, and bed bug management in contemporary times. \nPatrick (PJ) Liesch is a statewide entomology specialist and director of the University of Wisconsin Insect Diagnostic Lab (IDL). Every year\, the IDL handles over 2\,400 insect identification requests from Wisconsin’s farmers\, private industry\, university and government agencies\, the general public\, and other groups. PJ also provides entomology-related outreach throughout the state\, including regular appearances on Wisconsin Public Radio.

SUMMARY:Badger Talk: What's Your Favorite Color?
DESCRIPTION:This is a free\, in-person talk hosted on October 22\, 2026 at 6:00 PM by Holmen Public Library in Holmen\, WI. No registration required. This talk will not be available virtually. This event is a part of the Wisconsin Science Festival!\n\nHave you ever wondered why you like some colors more than others\, and why you have color preferences at all? I will discuss how we form our color preferences\, why different people have different color preferences and why color preferences change with the season.\n\nKaren Schloss is an Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the Department of Psychology and Wisconsin Institute for Discovery. Her Visual Reasoning Lab studies how people interpret meaning from visual features\, with the goal of making visual communication more effective and efficient. Dr. Schloss received her BA from Barnard College\, Columbia University in 2005\, with a major in Psychology and a minor in Architecture. She completed her Ph.D. in Psychology at the University of California\, Berkeley in 2011 and continued on as a Postdoctoral Scholar from 2011-2013. She spent three years as an Assistant Professor of Research in the Department of Cognitive\, Linguistic\, and Psychological Sciences at Brown University before joining the faculty at UW–Madison in 2016. Dr. Schloss was awarded the Steve Yantis Early Career Award from the Psychonomic Society\, and her lab is supported by an NSF CAREER award on Visual Reasoning for Visual Communication.

DESCRIPTION:This is a free\, in-person talk hosted on October 25\, 2026 at 1:00 PM by La Crosse County Historical Society and the Nature Place in La Crosse\, WI. No registration required. This talk will not be available virtually.\n\nWisconsin is home to 500 kinds of native bees! Discover the diversity and life histories of these important pollinators. Learn how you can create and manage habitat for them\, using native plants and bee-friendly gardening practices.\n\nSusan Carpenter is the Native Plant Garden curator and gardener at the University of Wisconsin–Madison Arboretum. Since 2003\, she has worked with students and community volunteers to maintain and monitor a 4-acre garden representing the plant communities of southern Wisconsin. She also leads a conservation project that involves students and the public in documenting and studying native bumble bees\, including the endangered rusty-patched bumble bee\, Bombus affinis. A graduate of Stanford University\, Susan earned her MS in Botany and MS in Science Education at UW–Madison. Her professional interests include plant ecology\, ecological restoration\, pollinator conservation\, and science education.

DESCRIPTION:This is a free\, in-person Badger Talk Workshop hosted on October 26\, 2026 at 3:30 PM by Eager Free Public Library in Evansville\, WI. More information to come on registration. This event will not be available virtually.\n\nThe Alien Blood crime scene investigation is a time-tested activity that engages students in the act of empirical science through use of standard molecular biology tools and techniques that include micropipettes and gel electrophoresis.\n\nElizabeth (Liz) Jesse is a Science Outreach Specialist at the UW Biotechnology Center. Liz worked as a middle and high school classroom teacher for ten years\, at both public and public charter schools in the Sheboygan Area. She also has experience working in the private sector as a pharmaceutical lab technician. Liz’s outreach focuses on designing and implementing curriculum for biology and chemistry workshops for the public with an emphasis on K-12 students. Liz is an active member of the UW Madison Science Alliance group. She is also on the planning committee for the Science Expeditions campus open house and the Madison Expanding Your Horizons girls’ STEM conference.
