SUMMARY:The Science of Human Thriving: Celebrating 100 Years of the Child Development Lab
DESCRIPTION:The Science of Human Thriving: Celebrating 100 Years of the Child Development Lab exhibits the innovative\, research-based work of University of Wisconsin–Madison teachers\, faculty\, scholars\, and students in the science of early relational health. Rooted in this history\, visitors are encouraged to consider how design shapes the spaces where children play\, learn\, and explore. Interactive displays and replicated study scenarios invite visitors into the world of the Child Development Lab throughout its first 100 years\, with a focus on the research that takes place at every level in support of the social\, emotional\, and educational development of UW’s youngest students. \nThis exhibition is curated by Dr. Sarah Anne Carter\, Chipstone Foundation Design and Material Culture Chair\, Associate Professor of Design Studies\, and Executive Director of the Nancy M. Bruce Center for Design and Material Culture\, in collaboration with Saffron Gonzalez\, the Child Development Lab Centennial Project Coordinator\, and many generous colleagues in the Child Development Lab and Human Development and Family Studies Department. The Science of Human Thriving and its related programs are made possible with support from the Anonymous Fund\, many generous donors and partners who share the vision of the Nancy M. Bruce Center for Design and Material Culture\, and the School of Human Ecology. The center creates meaningful opportunities for students\, faculty\, and the broader community to engage with textiles\, design\, and material culture. \nIn 2026\, University of Wisconsin–Madison’s School of Human Ecology is marking 100 years of its Child Development Lab\, among the first university-based preschool laboratories of its kind in the U.S.\, and celebrating its leading role in the field of early relational health. DESCRIPTION:There’s a tiny endangered neighbor living in Wisconsin—and you might walk right past one without ever knowing it. \nMeet the rusty patched bumble bee\, one of Wisconsin’s native bumble bees and the first bumble bee species in the United States to receive federal protection under the Endangered Species Act. \nThen head outside and explore the kind of world a bumble bee needs. \nAt Treinen Farm in Lodi\, Wisconsin\, our 2026 corn maze theme\, The Birds and the Bees\, takes guests into the wonderfully strange science of pollination\, reproduction\, biodiversity\, birds\, bees\, and the many ways living things depend on one another. \nBeyond the corn maze\, explore our restored prairie and oak savanna and look more closely at the flowers\, insects\, birds\, and habitats around you. Why do native flowers matter? Where do bumble bees spend the winter? What does a bee need besides flowers? And just what is that “rusty patch\,” anyway? \nCome get lost in the maze—and leave looking at the little things around you differently. \nWho: All ages are welcome. This new series of SoundWaves brings together leading academic researchers and live music to explore origins at every scale – from the birth of the universe to the first human communities. Each edition pairs scholars from distinct disciplines with a musical program to answer the oldest questions we know. \nThis first SoundWaves event of the year launches our year-long exploration of Origins. Part of the Wisconsin Science Festival and Klez Fest Midwest\, this event looks at The Beginning of Everything. How did the universe come to be\, and how have scientists thought about the universe’s origins in the past? Special musical guests The Klezmatics\, perhaps the most important and popular klezmer band of all time\, will then look at the origins of klezmer music\, followed by a performance that will wow you. \nThis event is free but registration is required to ensure adequate seating. Interactive displays and replicated study scenarios invite visitors into the world of the Child Development Lab throughout its first 100 years\, with a focus on the research that takes place at every level in support of the social\, emotional\, and educational development of UW’s youngest students. \nThis exhibition is curated by Dr. Sarah Anne Carter\, Chipstone Foundation Design and Material Culture Chair\, Associate Professor of Design Studies\, and Executive Director of the Nancy M. Bruce Center for Design and Material Culture\, in collaboration with Saffron Gonzalez\, the Child Development Lab Centennial Project Coordinator\, and many generous colleagues in the Child Development Lab and Human Development and Family Studies Department. The Science of Human Thriving and its related programs are made possible with support from the Anonymous Fund\, many generous donors and partners who share the vision of the Nancy M. Bruce Center for Design and Material Culture\, and the School of Human Ecology. The center creates meaningful opportunities for students\, faculty\, and the broader community to engage with textiles\, design\, and material culture. \nIn 2026\, University of Wisconsin–Madison’s School of Human Ecology is marking 100 years of its Child Development Lab\, among the first university-based preschool laboratories of its kind in the U.S.\, and celebrating its leading role in the field of early relational health. SUMMARY:POST-FESTIVAL EVENT: Badgers on Tap - Día de los Muertos at Cielo in Madison\, WI
DESCRIPTION:Join Cielo on State Street for a Badgers on Tap event on October 28\, 2026 at 6:30 PM to learn about Día de los Muertos! There will be a screening of the short film “La Vida y Los Muertos” by Carolyn Kallenborn\, followed by a discussion with the speaker herself (she will participate via Zoom). This event is a part of the Wisconsin Science Festival! \nLa Vida y Los Muertos is filled with rich visuals and captivating music to evoke the beauty\, joy\, sadness and magic of the Day of the Dead in Oaxaca\, Mexico. The film winds its way from the funky urban feel of the city of Oaxaca\, through the intimate home altars in Teotitlan and Mitla\, the enchanting candle-lit midnight cemetery of Atzompa\, and the joyous flower covered graves in San Antonino. La Vida y Los Muertos is a “silent” film with no narration\, inviting the audience to immerse themselves in the music and the imagery to experience a slowing down of time that is an inherent part of the festival. The film provides an opportunity to notice the care and thoughtfulness of the preparations and to experience the joyous celebration of life. \nAs an art film\, La Vida y Los Muertos is a journey through the city of Oaxaca and five near-by villages during the celebration of Day of the Dead. In the city and in the villages\, this beautiful festival of death is very lively. The juxtaposition of music\, food and celebration with cemeteries and death is surreal. With little narration\, rich visuals and complex soundtrack\, each chapter captures the mood and the impression of one particular place.
