Visit Richard Bong State Recreation Area
Sunday10/246:00 am - 11:00 pm
Once designated to be a jet fighter base, Richard Bong State Recreation Area is named after Major Richard I. Bong, a Poplar, Wisconsin, native who was America’s leading air ace during World War II. The air base was abandoned three days before concrete was to be poured for a 12,500-foot runway. Local citizens had the foresight to protect this open space for future generations.
Richard Bong State Recreation Area property is open year-round from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Office hours vary by season and staff availability. Fees and park business are handled at the entrance station or visitor center. When both locations are closed, a self-registration station is available.
During winter the visitor center is typically open weekends 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Tuesday-Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; closed Monday.
