Glass: From Beer Bottles to Cell Phone Displays

Thursday10/136:00 pm - 7:00 pm

In everyday speech, “glass” usually means windows or beer bottles. It may surprise you that the light produced by cell phone displays also comes from a glass.

In science, “glass” is a general term that refers to any solid whose atoms are not packed in a regular manner. Glasses are really useful materials.

In this talk at Delta Beer Lab, I’ll describe current research at UW-Madison about how to make better glass, including brighter and more durable cell phone displays, by improving processing. Bring your questions about any type of glass: tempered glass, optical fibers, telescope mirrors, Pyrex, plexiglass, beer bottles, “crystal” and more.
